In Detail:
Relationships with Authors:
Thistledown’s publicity strategy is built by creating detailed plans with each individual author. Authors have varying levels of experience with social media platforms, in-person events, and speaking or touring engagements. Much of the work of the Publicity and Marketing Manager is to work with authors to create plans that are within budget for Thistledown and fit an author’s expectations. This is a role for someone who likes working with people.
Publicity and Events:
Graphic design experience, including expertise in Canva and Adobe InDesign, is required for this position. The successful candidate will design all print promotional media; online and print advertisements; seasonal catalogues and Title Information Sheets for new titles; and social media content across several platforms.
Literary prizes have overlapping deadlines throughout the year, and it is also the responsibility of the Publicity and Marketing Manager to track submission periods, prepare submission packages, administrate the associated fees, mail out books to prizes ahead of deadlines, and ensure that those submission packages meet all necessary requirements.
Event planning is another fundamental aspect of this position. Thistledown plans a minimum of six book launches per year and coordinates with authors on additional public readings depending on budget and author availability. Coordinating with literary festivals, booksellers, and literary associations requires excellent organization and the skills necessary to juggle overlapping deadlines with ease. The Publicity and Marketing Manager will attend events as needed to host, manage book sales, and photograph the event for social platforms.
Social Media Management:
Thistledown has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, BlueSky, and YouTube. Familiarity with the online culture of each platform is an asset. Thistledown follows posting schedules to keep channels active, and the pace quickens during launch season. Thistledown Press does not use AI to generate any content, including online content, and the successful candidate will have the skills to create social media posts without AI tools.
Website Management:
Maintaining Thistledown’s website and online store will require knowledge and previous experience with WordPress, WooCommerce, and WooPayments or similar e-commerce platforms. This aspect of the role includes fulfilling web orders, managing office stock, and communicating with Thistledown’s distributor.
